History Part 1:
Christine and I met in homeroom on the first day of 8th grade at Covenant Christian School . The year was 2002. She was 12, I was 13. She had long, flowing blonde hair, a cute outfit, freckles, and glasses. She came from a very structured background... a mom and a dad, siblings, church ever Sunday. She would never be caught dead saying the cr*p word, or any other inappropriate euphemisms for that matter. She was a genius in our eyes. She had skipped a grade and was one year younger than everyone else in the class. She did her homework, had integrity, respected her teachers, never got a pink slip in her entire life. She was always on time, always had a packed lunch, was polite to everyone, modest... now this was an exceptional girl. She had something about her. She was different than the rest of my classmates. She knew God and she acted like Him...I was, if nothing, completely curious. I was in the same homeroom. I sat towards the back. I was a bit unkempt, pasty, and wearing gender-inappropriate clothing. My hair was blonde..then blue...then purple...then orange depending on my mood that month. I often forgot my lunch, so I had to beg, borrow, and steal off of everyone else. My family was a bit of a mess. Lovely, but a mess. Although I lived closer to the school than any of my other classmates, my routine typically consisted of the tardy bell ringing in my ears as I sneaked into the backdoor of the school building to get to first period. My claim to fame was my inordinately loud belching. I could let one go in Mrs. Middleton's geometry class, and the 9th graders could here it across the hall in Mrs. Melvin's room. I was proud of that. I used my humor as a coping mechanism and enjoyed the attention I drew from it. Pink slips weren't all too uncommon. I spent time in the principal's office. I spent time in morning detention. I caused trouble in study hall. More often than not I was asked to switch desks with other students because I simply could not manage to keep my mouth shut for the duration of the lectures. My Sundays were spent eating ice-pops, playing Nintendo-64, and watching TLC Home Makeover shows. I was odd, forgetful, awkward, and hurting. I was drawn to Christine. Had you of told me at that time that 10 years later I would love her as much as I would a sibling, that we would live in the same city, be pursing God furiously, and be actively encouraging each other in the Lord...I would have called you crazy.
To be continued...
